The “SciFi Channel”:http://www.scifi.com has decided to renew “Stargate SG-1″:http://www.scifi.com/stargate/ for an eighth season. Although most shows rarely last so long (save monstrocities like “Friends”:http://www.nbc.com/Friends/ and really good shows like Seinfield (“funny quotes”:http://www.amusingquotes.com/h/s/Jerry_Seinfield_1.htm), I think Stargate and its characters have matured to a point that still warrants more exploration. Certainly the plot lines are still dangling with Anubis ready to strike the Earth and the Lost City (built by the Ancients) ready to be found.

I have high hopes for both the new season of Stargate and the new series. Hopefully, the actors in the new series can present some new faces and attitues, while avoiding cliché acting. Certainly the script goes a long way toward enabling the actors, but they also play a pivotal role in the success of the show through their interpretations and talent at playing a realistic person.

A “SciFi Lowdown”:http://www.scifi.com/lowdown/stargate/ previewing the transition to the new series and introducing the new cast will show on July 5 at 10:00 PM EST. I hope to be able to catch that, as it should be interesting seeing the actors for who they are before they step into their new roles. SciFi better not give away any big plot lines, though, because I enjoy the suspense— and who doesn’t?

To catch the season premier of Stargate SG-1, watch the SciFi channel at 9:00 PM EST on July 9. The series premier of Stargate Atlantis will show on July 16 at 9:00 PM EST. Be sure to watch for my thoughts on these two 2-hour premiers.

Now, I try not to get caught up in TV marketing and the incessent advertising for new shows, but “5ive Days To Midnight”:http://www.5daystomidnight.com/ really caught my attention one evening while relaxing in front of the TV.

This was a five (who would have thought?) show mini-series that was a new, and creative twist on the good ol’ murder mystery. Particularly fascinating was the discussion of temporal paradoxes–which most sci fi freaks should be familiar with. Now, I’m not saying that I believe that time travel in either direction is or ever will be possible, but if it were, and humans could traverse the fourth dimension of time, how would such paradoxes resolve themselves? If I send a package back in time and prevent a murder of someone close to me, I will have lived a new life from the moment in the past the pacakge was received and used. Do I still have to send the package to the past to ensure the same events occur (i.e. prevent the murder)? Who knows, but it is interesting to ponder.

Thankfully, the series does not invent pseudo-science to explain events, and really just sticks with the main theme: a murder mystery with three primary suspects and a few loops. The suspense certainly kept me interested and I hope “SciFi”:http://www.scifi.com/ replays it soon, so that I may watch the first two episodes that I chose to ignore.
